Cross Country Kayak Adventure
A cross country kayak adventure became an epoch in the life of local businessman, Hank Landau. Recently he spoke of his journey which began on the Pacific coast, and ended at the Atlantic. During this 4,700+ mile trip, Hank paddled his kayak, portaged mountains by bicycle, and walked, dragging his kayak behind him (mostly solo)… all of it non-motorized.
This journey took place over several years, with Hank setting goals for each year, and in many instances, leaving his kayak in place, until the following season. In total he paddled 19 rivers and waterways, navigated 31 dams, and passing through or around 17 states.
Hank told Kiwanians about several misadventures including being swept over a dam, being chased by an alligator, and having a nest of fire ants land in his kayak while being lost in the Okefenokee Swamp.
When asked when and why he decided to tackle this trip, he noted that he’d began in his mid 60s, and following a life threatening auto accident, felt life was meant to be lived, and he was just going to go for it.
Hank Landau is an inspiration to us all.
