988 Can Save Someone You Love
Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth and teens in #SnohomishCounty? It is shocking that right behind accidents (vehicular, overdose, others) suicide in youth, ranks 2nd as a cause of death for our younger population.
There are many warning signs. Some are obvious: being #bullying, talking about wanting to die or actively looking for ways to kill oneself. Giving away prized possessions and/or increased use of alcohol or drugs. Other signs are more subtle and may be less easy to identify such as mood swings, withdrawing, or changes in school success (failure).
A nearly decade long study shows that the only year in recent history that did not have a single suicide was 2020, the first year of the pandemic. This is not to say that our youth did not suffer from isolation, feelings of loss, or bouts of depression. It does however, tell us that some of the protective factors for that year, were that they were home. They got more sleep, had more family time and interaction (including pets), had less juggling of commitments, less chances of bullying, more flexible academic schedules, and less outside distractions. In many cases, they literally had more supervision.
Suicide is a complex topic and not one that is easily addressed in a short article. But here are some ways to help if someone voices their intention to cause themselves harm:
Listen – Do not leave that person alone – Remove dangerous items (firearms, sharp objects – Offer hope “you matter!” – Get others involved (family, friends, clergy) – Follow up with a text or call…. and VERY importantly… CALL OR TEXT 988 at any time for support or assistance 24/7.
On Saturday, February 3rd, the Snohomish County Youth Suicide Prevention Taskforce is hosting an event at Rosehill Community Center. Training and resources will be available that day. Two of our club partners Tapped Public House and The Sound Pizza & Pub are providing food (thanks guys) and it will be an informative and valuable time for the whole community.
Please join us in supporting them as they educate our #community about youth suicide prevention.
