Back To School…

Our club went back to school! This week’s meeting was a field trip to Sno-Isle TECH, a skills based, career focused education for high school students. Juniors and seniors in area wide high schools may apply to attend Sno-Isle for up to half of their school day, to learn AND gain credit for skills such as culinary arts, welding, nursing, IT, fire-fighting, fashion and design, cosmetology, aeronautics, automotive, animal husbandry and much more.

Students from as far away as Darrington high school, and as close as Mariner or Kamiak high schools, may spend up to 3.5 hours (or three class periods) focusing on subjects that will give them a career path to post high school life.

The skills center is closely tied to local businesses and job sites, meaning students have a connection, and sometimes a lead, into a job following graduation. Many local car showrooms, pharmacy sites, medical offices, etc have on-site mentoring/intern opportunities. It is critical for students to have hands on experience to dovetail with classroom development.

Sno-Isle TECH has state of the art technology and equipment, providing students with high quality experiences in the classroom. For example, the nursing program offers “lifelike” mannequins with “skin” that is so sensitive it can record human-like behaviors when touched by the “nurse.”

Real life situations are presented in the classroom for critical thinking. One example is a situation that needed a solution at the Denver International Airport. Students were given a task, and brainstormed an idea that provided a “screw”… which is now used at the airport. Kids these days! Wow.

Sno-Isle TECH – Everett is the third largest tech school in the state and we are fortunate to have this crucial education site in our own back yard. With well over 1,000 students coming through the doors each day, we are grateful for the many unique and creative ways they respond to the educational needs of our local youth.
